Somaliland Coast Guard officials have inaugurated a new mini fuel station at their Berbera base, which was handed over by the European Union Capacity Building Mission (EUCAP), as part of efforts to increase the Coast Guard’s capacity to respond to emergencies and fight crime at sea. The fuel station will mean Coast Guard vessels can refuel directly as needed, instead of previously needing to manually transport fuel.
A video conferencing system, new parts for boats and office furniture was also handed over to the Somaliland officers during the ceremony in Berbera, which was attended by senior Coast Guard and EUCAP officials. It is aimed that the video conference equipment will assist the Coast Guard officers in liaising with other law enforcement partners quickly online and will also support COVID-19 prevention measures.
The handover of the station, I.T. equipment and new parts for vessels are part of ongoing EUCAP support for Somaliland Coast Guard operations, which includes technical advisory support as well as logistical and human resources
